Brief Biography

Growing up in Oregon

My childhood is now the subject of a book (written by my father, William L. Sullivan). As a kid and teenager, I spent every summer at a log cabin in the Oregon woods, without electricity or plumbing. My parents built this cabin by hand without the use of power tools.

My mother, a watercolor artist, sparked my interest in sketching outdoors.

Undergrad and beyond

I left high school a year and a half early with a National Merit Scholarship, and enrolled at the nearby University of Oregon. My interest in languages and literature soon led me into the German and Scandinavian Focus major. I had a certain amount of personal interest in Scandinavian culture as well, because my grandfather's parents were Danish immigrants. My award-winning B.A. thesis combined historical research and creative writing.

In 2002, I moved down the coast to Berkeley and began life as a grad student in Linguistics. I earned my M.A. in 2004, advanced to candidacy in 2005, and earned my Ph.D. in Fall 2007.

I then began a postdoctoral research position at the Autonomous University of Barcelona conducting corpus, typological and experimental research as part of the multinational ALEAR project. I'm continuing this research as a Visiting Scholar and Lecturer at the University of Murcia.

I'm excited about moving to Australia in June, and working as a Lecturer in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland.
